This review is primarily for Spanish teachers to help determine if the book would be a good fit for their classes. It is rated A2-B1 on the CEFR. It is a non-fiction book. The photos in the Kindle version are small but clear. I have not seen the paper version. It has a good glossary. Each chapter talks about the life of one or more young person/s.Jovenes Mexicanos has five chapters:
Amigueros de corazon
Tribus urbanas
Que trabajadores
Los jovenes indigenas
Jovenes en accion
The first chapter talks about pastimes of Mexican young people, parties, concerts, TV, internet, Quinces and more.
I found the "tribus urbanas" to be the most interesting chapter. It discusses groups like the "Otakus" who are into Japanese anime in Mexico City. It also talks about "darks" (goths), gamers, chacas (into reggaeton) and others.
The third chapter is about jobs and some differences between the US and Mexico concerning jobs, such as fewer young people in Mexico work and go to college at the same time. It discusses the more popular career majors in Mexico. It brings up "ninis," who I'd never herd of before, those who are not in "education, employment or training."
The fourth chapter is about indigenous peoples. It discusses a spring festival at Teotihuacan. It talks about the lack of internet pages in native languages, such as Zapotec. Rodrigo Perez Ramirez is a zapoteco who is trying to change that and his story is included. Migration to large cities in Mexico or the US is part of the chapter as well. Discrimination is discussed in this chapter.
The fifth chapter deals with social action, such as the group "No mas sangre" which is against violence. Another group is the environmentally friendly, "Muevete Por Tu Ciudad." they are against litter and pro bicycle. The last group mentioned is concerned with water quality. That chapter ends very abruptly.
There is no summation after chapter five. The chapters seemed a little short as well. They were interesting enough to want more information in each chapter. This book hits on many of the themes for the 2014 version of the AP test, especially since the publication was 2012. I don't believe you will regret buying this book.
